New Zealand

February 1999

The cathedral of Chirstchurch.
No, this is not from Venize. A view in Central park of Chirstchurch.
From Christchurch I left west up to mountains by Transalpine train. A hilly landscape just before arriving Southern Alps.

Arthur's Pass. A small village which was born when a railroad tunnel throught the Southern Alps was built. This village is surrounded by Arthur's Pass National Park.

Arthur's Pass National Park has some great views. Also several rare birds can be spotted there like keas (Nestor notabilis), the mountain parrots.
A waterfall called The Devils Bunchbowl. Hard to say how high it is, but I guess that it is about 20+ meters high.
View from the top of the Avalance Peak (1833m). One could think that on the top of the mountain you are alone. Guess again. I was at the top about half hour and during that time approximately 10 people visite there!
Pancake Rocks in Punakaiki on the west coast of Southern Island and the shore of Tasmanian Sea.
Entering the Cook strait and the Southern Pasific Ocean opens in east. A ship trip from Picton to Wellington was a nice one.
Wellington, the capital of New Zealand by night.

Wellington is a clean and modern city. A little bit too clean I think.

2797 m high Mt. Ruapehu, one of several active volcanos in the middle of the North Island. Mt. Ruapehu erupted in 1990's.
Lake Taupo. One of the biggest volcano crater on Earth. This erruption must be a huge one.
Waikato river near Taubo. Place was a paradice. There was a benji-jump place on the top of that white cliff.

Rotorua area is volcanically active with several volcanos and lots of hot springs even in the middle of the town. This sing was on the shore of Rotorua lake.
A geysir. This one erupted as a clock. Well, the guide put soap in the hole and that cause eruption.
A small hot spring in Waimangu termal valley. Maori people used this kind of hot springs for coking.Waimangu valley was formed when a nearby Mt. Tarawera volcano erupted violently in the end of 19th century.
The Inferno crater. Water is blue because copparsulfide.
Kiwi people and a strange sport at Rotorua.

City of Sails - Auckland, the biggest city of New Zealand and this is its airport. Unfortunately I didn't have money and time to be in Auckland.
